About Us

About the College

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) was established in 2012. Over the years since its establishment, CSSH experienced some changes that resulted from the inclusion of certain units.  In 2012 Departments of Geography and Environmental Studies, English Language and Literature, and Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature-Amharic were opened. In 2013, the Department of Sociology, in 2016 the Department of Political Science and International Relations, in 2017 the Department of theatrical Arts, and in 2018 the Department of History and Heritage Management were established. Furthermore, in addition to the main Compass, the College has opened different post-graduate programs in different specializations in Sekota and Gashena branches. Thus in 2018 MA in TEFL, in 2022 MA in Political Science, MA in Development Studies, MA in Food Security and Development, and MA in Natural Resource Management programs were started. Furthermore, in 2023 MA in Ethiopian Literature and Folklore was opened. As a result, the college has eight undergraduate and nine post graduate programs under its guidance. In the coming soon, the college is preparing Geez and Arabic BA curriculums. And it is working to open departments such as Archaeology and Anthropology in the Undergraduate program.

With regard to the human resource concerned, the college has senior faculties who have rich experience in different field of specialization. Thus, it has greater than 17 Assistant professors and greater than 99 lecturers who are actively engaging in the day to day activities of teaching-learning, research and community engagements of the university. Furthermore, the college has greater than 38 PhD candidates and around 7 MA candidates who are attending their education in different universities of Ethiopia and out, and expected to complete their education in the nearest time ahead. 

To heighten its teaching, research and community service capacity, the college has identified Tourism as its center of excellence. Of the tourism types, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities has identified cultural tourism, ecotourism, and peace tourism as its point of excel. Hence, the college would like to invite the government and non-government organizations, and individuals who want to collaborate and work together with us on the areas of peace, tourism, migration, displacement, culture, development and other humanitarian and crosscutting issues.
