About the Department

Geography is concerned with the spatial dimension of Geographic Phenomena and interconnection of humans and environment. Geography and environmental studies lie in the need to understand and address the complex relationships between human beings and their natural environment. This field integrates the spatial analysis geography with the study of environmental systems, sustainability, and human impacts on the earth. Geography not only mediated between natural or physical sciences and biosciences on one hand and the social sciences on the other but also bridged and synthesized their mutual common broad spectrum underpinning through its core thrust on man – environment relationships, which naturally integrate them all.  With global concerns about climate change, resources depletion, and sustainability, there is a pressing need for experts who can assess environmental problems, create sustainable solution and influence policy. Geography provides tools like geographic information systems and remote sensing to analyse spatial data which is very vital for urban planning, environmental management, disaster risk management and resources management. The department also provides insights on global environmental issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and deforestations; and localized problems such as urbanizations, land use changes and water management.
