About the Department

The Department of History and Heritage Management is one of the basic disciplines of Social Sciences and Humanities. The department was established in 2017. Since then, the department is endeavoring to train students and conducting research and community service activities. The Department of History and Heritage Management equips students with a comprehensive understanding of historical processes and the skills necessary to manage and preserve cultural heritage. The program blends rigorous historical studies with practical training in heritage management, archaeology, tourism, and museum studies.

Program Structure

The program is structured to provide a balanced foundation in both historical knowledge and heritage management practices. It includes:

1. Core Historical Studies:

  • Ethiopian History: A deep dive into the history of Ethiopia, exploring its diverse cultures, political systems, and social transformations from ancient times to the present.
  • African History: A broad overview of African history, covering major civilizations, colonial experiences, and contemporary challenges.
  • World History: A global perspective on historical trends and events, examining the interconnectedness of civilizations and the development of human societies.

2. Heritage Management Studies:

  • Heritage Studies: Introduces students to the theory and practice of heritage management, encompassing the identification, documentation, preservation, and interpretation of cultural heritage sites and resources.
  • Archaeology: Provides hands-on training in archaeological methods, including fieldwork, excavation, and analysis of artifacts focusing on archaeology of Ethiopia and the Horn.
  • Tourism Management: Focuses on the principles and practices of tourism management, exploring the economic, social, and environmental aspects of tourism development.
  • Museum Studies: Develops skills in museum planning, collection management, exhibition design, and museum education.
