About the Department

The importance of the English language is undeniable, as it stands out as one of the few languages used globally for communication and various forms of interaction, including economic and political exchanges between nations across continents. In countries like Ethiopia, teaching English at the undergraduate level is essential for producing citizens capable of engaging effectively on a global scale and contributing to national development in various sectors. Therefore, this program is offering a diverse range of learning experiences to familiarize students with the breadth and richness of English studies. The curriculum integrates a comprehensive selection of courses that combine both theoretical and practical approaches to English language studies. The course of study encompass General English Skills, Linguistics, Literature, Journalism, and Communications. Earning a BA Degree in English Language and Literature will equip students to pursue careers in editing, writing, research, interpretation, broadcasting, and public relations. Furthermore, this program is providing students with a strong foundation in the English language, enhancing their capabilities for professional success.

To achieve the above objectives, the Department of English Language began as the English Language Teaching Unit in 2004, staffed by 18 lecturers at the inception of Woldia University. The unit aimed to equip students with essential English language skills for academic success, initially offering courses in Communicative English Skills and Basic Writing Skills to all undergraduate students. Following the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, the department enrolled its first cohort of 32 students in a B.A. in English Language and Literature program and later expanded to include summer courses, graduating over 215 students.
